Have you ever arrived at an event only to find out that your dress matches the tablecloths? That just might happen when you try out this quintessential summer/spring check print – gingham! I have to admit, I always lowkey hated this print from afar, especially when it was everywhere last summer. I saw this dress on the Forever21 website and decided to give it a go. I’ve never been one to shy away from bold/statement pieces, so why start now? I was pleasantly surprised by the fit of the dress; the ruffles are so pretty. I paired it with the ZARA straw bag featured in my previous post, and my favourite pair of mules and cat-eye sunglasses (both from ZARA). I also picked up the hat online from Forever21 but wasn’t pleased with the fit- I was expecting a wider brim.

After a very interesting shoot, all through which my photographer wouldn’t stop commenting on how I look like I’m wearing a tablecloth, I started thinking about some great places I’d wear this gingham print to. Here’s what I came up with:

  • Summer picnic or BBQ. I know this is the most likely place you’ll end up matching the napkins and tablecloths but if you don’t mind that, think of how great your outfit will look in photos, next to the vibrant greens of the grass and beautiful glow from the sun.
  • Touristy activities. I know that could mean just about anything, but when I say this, I picture a day of museum hopping, soaking in art and culture and just enjoying a fun day with that carefree aura of being on vacation.
  • Sunday brunch. When accessorized appropriately, this print will blend right in with mimosas and eggs benedicts or french toast (yum!). It would be great to wear to a casual lunch date as well.

All in all, I’m reconciling my love-hate relationship with the gingham print. I might even try it out in blouses and even accessories. What do you think? Do you love it or hate it?
