How to Style a Sweater for a Christmas Party

If you live in a place with seasonal climate, you may be familiar with the term sweater weather. Having lived in the tropics for a few months this year, I missed the comfort of a nice comfy sweater. I knowww the sunny days and beautiful beaches are more than enough to compensate for the lack of or need for sweaters. More so, now that I’m back in the freezing land of Canada, I definitely miss the sun but winter fashion is still everything! Layering for the cold makes it easier to seamlessly combine comfort and style in one outfit. Needless to say, sweaters are absolutely vital to complete your winter wardrobe. In this post, I’ll talk about how to break away from the typical sweater & jeans combo and style sweaters for dressier occasions like the quintessential holiday parties.

The key is to compensate for a sweater’s casualness by adding dressy elements to other components of your outfit. Think sequins, velvet, metallic accents, etc. Also, resist the urge to wear your sweater with a pair of jeans but rather substitute them for different bottoms. How about dress pants or velvet culottes (like I have on in this post); midi skirts are also a great option especially for a more fitted sweater like I styled here.

Of course, like I always say, accessories are important but be careful not to make it an overkill. I wore minimal accessories in this shoot since my sweater was already super embellished with the beautiful sequins and the gold chain accent of my bag, and velvet fabric of my bottoms did the trick in elevating this look.

This would be a great outfit for a work holiday party or a festive dinner date. Can’t believe it’s only three days till Christmas! Are you excited?
